Rotary Drilling Unit I Lesson 6: The Drawworks And The Compound

The drawwork is a part of the system that rotary drilling rigs use for hoisting, or lifting, the drill stem and causing out of the hole. The earliest hoist, a windlass or winch, was a simple drum, or spool, sitting horizontally between two posts with one end of a rope attached to it. The other end of the rope was attached to something a person wanted to lift, such as a bucket.
